Why on December 22?
The selection of 22 December as a mother’s day is of course not without reason. on the 22nd to the 25th of December 1928 Thousands of women attended a congress at a Dalem Jayadipuran pavilion, owned by a nobleman, R.T. Joyodipoero. (At present the building is used as the office of the Center for Preservation of History and Traditional Values on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, Yogyakarta.) The Women’s Congress is chaired by R.A. Soekonto with Nyi Hajar Dewantoro as his representative & Soejatien (Chair of the Indonesian Poetry Branch of Yogya) as secretary.
In the congress they fought for how women can have the same rights as men in both cases. The local Javanese newspaper, “Sedijo Tomo” expressed his admiration for the results of the congress but also reminded that the women’s movement which, despite being influenced by the West, should not lose its Eastern characteristics.
Some of the speeches read by female figures at the time of the Congress were not far from the themes of women’s equality such as the speech delivered by Mrs. R.A. Sudirman (Poeteri Boedi Sedjati) entitled “The Movement of Kaoem Wife, Marriage & Marriage”, Ny. Siti Moendjijah (Aisjijah Djokjakarta) read a speech entitled “Deradjat Perempoean”, R.A. Soekonto (Oetomo Woman) gave a speech entitled “Civil Service Authority in the Stairs of the Stairs”, and so on.
Reporting from tribunnews.com, the congress obtained several results such as the establishment of a joint federation body to unite women’s organizations called the Indonesian Women’s Association or PPPI, published newspapers with the composition of the management of PPPI members including Nyi Hadjar Dewantara, Hadjinah, Ny Ali Sastroamidjojo , Ismoediati, Budiah and Soenaryati, Establishing studiefonds that can be used by disadvantaged women, Strengthening women’s scouting activities, and Preventing child marriages.
In addition, this congress also produced a decision to send a motion to the government which contained demands that fonds or funds be held for widows and children, demands not to revoke pension funds, increase school fees for girls and demand religious Raad (court) so that every thalak process could reinforced with written evidence and in accordance with religious regulations.
On the basis of enthusiasm, and the role of women as stated at the congress, it was finally celebrated on December 22 as Mother’s Day in Indonesia. Although not yet officially commemorating Mother’s Day on December 22, it was only established at the Third Women’s Congress in 1938 or ten years after the Women’s Congress I, and was only inaugurated by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 316 Tahun 1959 on December 16, 1959 This article also appears on teraskita.id
